My mother taught me a lesson by telling me a story when I was a youngster. Don’t be hasty, and weigh things carefully before you strike. When your blood pressure gets up,count to ten."School your feelings,oh,my brother"is one of the best bits of advice ever given. Think before you act.

A hunter’s wife who lived in the Alaskan forest died suddenly. At this time their child was about two years old. When he went out hunting, the hunter had to leave the child for a few hours in the care of his faithful dog. On one afternoon when he was out hunting,a terrible snowstorm blew up. The storm was so terrible that he had to stay in a hollow tree to save his life. At daybreak,he rushed to his small house. The door was open. His dog which looked at him from the corner of his eyes was covered with blood. The father’s blood froze. Just one thing could have happened - his dog had turned wolf and had killed his child. He reached for his knife and buried it into the skull of his trusted animal.

Like a madman he looked at the scene. The broken furniture told a story of a battle that had taken place here an hour before. A faint cry came from under the bed. Again his heart seemed to jump out of his breast. There he found his son safe and sound. He took his dear son into his arms and wondered where the blood on his dog came from. The answer came a second later. In a corner, there was a dead wolf. His faithful dog had saved his son from the wolf.

A moment of caution was all that was needed and he could have held both his child and his hero dog in his arms. Remorse took over instead.

The 90/10 secret is incredible! Very few know and apply this secret. The result? Millions of people are suffering undeserved stress, trials, problems, and heartache. They never seem to be successful in life. Bad days follow bad days. Terrible things seem to be constantly happening. Worry consumes time; anger breaks friendships; and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest. Friends are lost. Life is a bore and often seems cruel. Does this describe you?

If so,do not be discouraged. You can be different! The 90/10 secret will change your life! What is this secret? Ten percent of life is made up of what happens to you. Ninety percent of life is decided by how you react.

What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane may be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%.

The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%! How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction.

Don’t let people fool you; you can control how you react!

Let’s use an example.

You’re eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react.

You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the coffee cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her,you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows.

You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit zone.

After a 15 minute delay and throwing $60 (traffic fine) away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs to the building without saying good bye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase.

Your day has started terrible. As it continues,it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to going home. When you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.

Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?

A) The coffee caused it.

B) Your daughter caused it.

C) The policeman caused it.

D) You caused it.

The answer is D. You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.

Here is what could have and should have happened. Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say,"It’s OK,honey, you just need to be more careful next time."Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase. You come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You and your spouse kiss before you both go to work. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good of day you are having.

Notice the difference? Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different. Why? Because of how you reacted. You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% is determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 secret.

If someone says something negative about you,do not be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You do not have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out, etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you loose your temper? Pound the steering wheel? (A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off!) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them? Why let the blue car ruin your drive? Remember the 90-10 principle, and do not worry about it!

You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep or get irritated? It will work out. Use your "worrying"energy and time into finding another job. The plane is late. It is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study,to get to know the other passengers, etc. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.

You now know the 90/10 secret. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results!

One morning Genghis Khan, the great king and warrior, rode out into the woods to have a day’s sport. Many of his friends were with him. They rode out gayly, carrying their bows and arrows. Behind them came the servants with the hounds.

It was a merry hunting party. The woods rang with their shouts and laughter. They expected to carry much game home in the evening.

On the king’s wrist sat his favorite hawk, for in those days hawks were trained to hunt. At a word from their masters they would fly high up into the air,and look around for prey. If they chanced to see a deer or a rabbit, they would swoop down upon it swift as any arrow.

All day long Genghis Khan and his huntsmen rode through the woods. But they did not find as much game as they expected.

Toward evening they started for home. The king had often ridden through the woods, and he knew all the paths. So while the rest of the party took the nearest way,he went by a longer road through a valley between two mountains.

The day had been warm, and the king was very thirsty. His pet hawk left his wrist and flown away. It would be sure to find its way home.

The king rode slowly along. He had once seen a spring of clear water near this pathway. If he could only find it now! But the hot days of summer had dried up all the mountain brooks.

At last,to his joy,he saw some water trickling down over the edge of a rock. He knew that there was a spring farther up. In the wet season,a swift stream of water always poured down here; but now it came only one drop at a time.

The king leaped from his horse. He took a little silver cup from his hunting bag. He held it so as to catch the slowly falling drops.

It took a long time to fill the cup; and the king was so thirsty that he could hardly wait. At last it was nearly full. He put the cup to his lips, and was about to drink.

All at once there was a whirring sound in the air,and the cup was knocked from his hands. The water was all spilled upon the ground.

The king looked up to see who had done this thing. It was his pet hawk.

The hawk flew back and forth a few times, and then alighted among the rocks by the spring.

The king picked up the cup,and again held it to catch the trickling drops.

This time he did not wait so long. When the cup was half full,he lifted it toward his mouth. But before it had touched his lips, the hawk swooped down again, and knocked it from his hands.

And now the king began to grow angry. He tried again, and for the third time the hawk kept him from drinking.

The king was now very angry indeed.

"How do you dare to act so?"he cried."If I had you in my hands,I would wring your neck!"

Then he filled his cup again. But before he tried to drink,he drew his sword.

"Now,Sir Hawk,"he said,"that is the last time."

He had hardly spoken before the hawk swooped down and knocked the cup from his hand. But the king was looking for this. With a quick sweep of the sword he struck the bird as it passed.

The next moment the poor hawk lay bleeding and dying at its master’s feet.

"That is what you get for your pains,"said Genghis Khan.

But when he looked for his cup,he found that it had fallen between two rocks, where he could not reach it.

"At any rate,I will have a drink from that spring,"he said to himself.

With that he began to climb the steep bank to the place from which the water trickled. It was hard work, and the higher he climbed, the thirstier he became.

At last he reached the place. There indeed was a pool of water. But what was that lying in the pool, and almost filling it? It was a huge, dead snake of the most poisonous kind.

The king stopped. He forgot his thirst. He thought only of the poor dead bird lying on the ground below him.

"The hawk saved my life!"he cried. "But how did I repay him? He was my best friend, and I have killed him."

He clambered down the bank. He took the bird up gently, and laid it in his hunting bag. Then he mounted his horse and rode swiftly home. He said to himself,"I have learned a sad lesson today, and that is,never to do anything in anger."

Lord Buddha was sitting under a banyan tree. One day,a furious Brahmin came to him and started abusing him.

The Brahmin thought that Buddha would reciprocate in the same manner, but to his utter surprise, there was not the slightest change in the expression on his face.

Now,the Brahmin became more furious. He hurled more and more abuses at Buddha. However,Buddha was completely unmoved. Actually there was a look of compassion on his face. Ultimately the Brahmin was tired of abusing him. He asked,"I have been abusing you like anything, but why are you not angry at all ?"

Lord Buddha calmly replied,"My dear brother,I have not accepted a single abuse from you."

"But you heard all of them, didn’t you?"The Brahmin argued.

Buddha said,"I do not need the abuses,so why should I even hear them?"

Now the Brahmin was even more puzzled. He could not understand the calm reply from Buddha.

Looking at his disturbed face,Buddha further explained,"All those abuses remain with you."

"It cannot be possible. I have hurled all of them at you,"the Brahmin persisted.

Buddha calmly repeated his reply,"But I have not accepted even a single abuse from you! Dear brother, suppose you give some coins to somebody, and if he does not accept them, with whom will those coins remain?"

he Brahmin replied,"If I have given the coins and they’re not needed by someone, then naturally they would remain with me."

With a meaningful smile on his face,Buddha said,"Now you are right. The same has happened with your abuses. You came here and hurled abuses at me,but I have not accepted a single abuse from you. Hence, all those abuses remain with you only. So there is no reason to be angry with you."

The Brahmin remained speechless. He was ashamed of his behavior and begged for Buddha’s forgiveness.

Inner calmness and peace are keys to contented life.

Anger of the heart causes us great injury. Hurt feelings, harsh words, nasty misunderstandings leave deep imprints in our minds and hearts. We dwell on the cruel and unkind violations against us. Letting go of anger about things that have occurred in the past is difficult. We get stuck and hold on to our anger, and the wounds grow deeper and fester. The pain keeps us from finding peace within ourselves. When is it time to let go?

It is time to let go when holding on to the anger no longer serves us. When carrying the burden of our anger keeps us from moving in the direction of our ideals. When the anger keeps us from growing and becoming the person we seek to be. How do we begin?

We begin by letting go. Just letting go. We begin by no longer allowing ourselves to dwell on the negative and relive the injustices. We focus on recovering from the injury. We recover by surrounding ourselves with loved ones we can trust and by moving on. Forgiveness comes much later.

Finding peace within ourselves doesn’t mean we forget about the anger. Rather,it means we choose to release it. To learn to live and love in a place where past grievances no longer touch us deeply brings wisdom and a life where harmony resides.
